THE WOODY PACK

My name is James “Woody” Beckham; I suffered a spinal cord injury in 2011 playing rugby. After my injury I discovered various types of devices to regain my independence. My self-confidence has grown because I have eliminated the need for help from others in various situations. Creating a collection of assistive devices for people with limited hand functioning came to mind after my personal challenges of adjusting to my new daily life.

That is how The Woody Pack was born and, at The Woody Foundation, we’re thrilled to be sharing it with the community at large.

Post injury it took a while to find just a fork that someone else didn’t have to put on my hand so that I could eat alone. Using my phone on my own was challenging, so until I found the holder included in the Woody Pack, I was always dropping it on the floor. Swiping my Metrorail card became effortless because of a retractable ID holder.

Assistive devices have helped me overcome my limited hand functioning after the injury. Imagine how many times a day you use your hands to pick-up a phone, cup, pen, fork or ID. Individuals using devices in The Woody Pack can overcome these and other daily obstacles. These devices allowed me to be more independent on a daily basis. My goal with the Woody Pack is to share that experience of regaining independence with others so they too can have the joy of going about their day on their own.
